Swedish Hemp — From Field to Ingredient, Entirely in Sweden
Sweden has a long history of hemp cultivation. From the medieval period through the 1960s, hemp was an everyday crop in Swedish agriculture, used for rope, textiles and food. After a half-century ban, industrial hemp cultivation was reintroduced in 2003, and since then interest in Swedish hemp has grown steadily — driven by climate awareness, demand for plant-based protein and the need for sustainable raw materials in the food industry.
Hemisphere Technologies is Sweden's only dedicated hemp seed processor, operating an FSSC 22000 certified and EU Organic facility in Arlandastad, north of Stockholm. We take raw hemp seed and transform it into five finished ingredients for the food industry, cosmetics sector and animal feed market — without chemical solvents, without additives, and with complete traceability through every step of the chain.
Why Swedish Hemp?
Industrial hemp is one of the most resource-efficient crops that can be grown in Northern Europe. It requires no irrigation, no pesticides and sequesters more carbon dioxide per hectare than most agricultural crops. Hemp matures in approximately 100 days, improves soil structure for subsequent crops, and every part of the plant — seed, hull, stalk and leaf — has commercial value.
Processing Swedish hemp locally in Sweden provides tangible advantages over imported alternatives. The supply chain is as short as possible — from Swedish field to finished ingredient without intermediaries or international freight. Traceability is complete and verifiable. Quality control happens at every step. And the opportunity to visit both cultivation and factory is always open for customers who want to see the process with their own eyes.
For European food manufacturers looking to source clean-label, traceable protein and oil ingredients with a genuine sustainability story, Swedish hemp from Hemisphere offers something that imported alternatives simply cannot match.
Our Swedish Hemp Products
From every hemp seed batch that arrives at our factory, we produce five distinct ingredients. Nothing is wasted — every fraction of every seed is used.
Hemp_PRO_2000 — Protein Flour 65% Our flagship product. 65% protein content, produced using our patent-pending solvent-free process. Light colour, mild flavour, fine particle structure. Contains all nine essential amino acids, 8.4 g fibre per 100 g, and is free from all 14 EU-declarable allergens. Used in sports nutrition, protein bars, bakery products, pasta and dairy-free alternatives.
Virgin_Pure_1000 — Cold-Pressed Hemp Seed Oil A clear, light oil with a mild nutty flavour. Rich in omega-3, omega-6 and the rare fatty acid GLA (gamma-linolenic acid). The omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is 3:1, one of the most optimal among all vegetable oils. Used as a functional oil in food products and as a base in cosmetic formulation (INCI: Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil).
Hemp_SEEDS_1000 — Dehulled Hemp Seeds Whole, dehulled hemp seeds with a creamy texture and mild, nutty flavour. A natural source of protein (approx. 30%), beneficial fats and minerals. Used as a topping in muesli, salads, yoghurt and baked goods.
Hemp_CRUNCH_1000 — Crushed Hemp Hearts Crushed, dehulled hemp seeds with a coarser texture. 39% fibre, 33% protein, just 2.5 g carbohydrates per 100 g. Perfect for granola, energy bars, baking and ketogenic product lines.
Hemp_FIBER_1000 — Hemp Seed Hulls Pure hemp seed hulls from our dehulling process. High in dietary fibre and cellulose. Used in animal feed, pet bedding, biocomposite materials and as a dietary fibre ingredient in functional food products.
Certifications and Quality
Our factory in Arlandastad is FSSC 22000 certified — the international food safety standard required by major food manufacturers and retail chains. We hold EU Organic certification with complete batch traceability from incoming raw material to delivered ingredient. Every shipment includes a full certificate of analysis.
Our patent-pending extraction process uses no chemical solvents — only mechanical processing. The result is ingredients that are cleaner, lighter and milder in flavour than conventionally produced hemp.
Swedish Hemp vs Imported Hemp
Most hemp sold as food ingredients in Europe originates from Canada, China or Eastern Europe. These products are often manufactured using chemical extraction methods, involve long transport chains and offer limited traceability.
Hemisphere offers an alternative: Swedish hemp, processed in Sweden, with complete traceability and documentation. For product developers working with premium products, organic brands or sustainability-driven product lines, this is an ingredient that communicates more than just nutritional value — it communicates origin, care and transparency.
The Swedish Hemp Market — Growing Fast
Interest in Swedish hemp is accelerating. Axfoundation is conducting cultivation trials at Torsåker Farm. Vinnova is funding research projects on hemp's potential in food and biomaterials. The Swedish Board of Agriculture supports hemp cultivation through the EIP-Agri programme. New players are emerging across everything from building materials to textiles.
Hemisphere operates at the heart of this development — as the actor that can actually deliver finished, certified hemp ingredients in commercial volumes to Swedish and European food manufacturers. We are not a research project or a pilot facility — we are a certified food factory with products in production and customers in delivery.
